Adding decking to your garden is a fantastic way to enhance both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Whether you're looking to create a space for dining, entertaining, or simply relaxing, a well-installed deck can transform your outdoor space. It’s a relatively low-cost investment, and if done well, can actually increase the financial value of your home. With the right materials, tools, and some planning, it's a project you can complete yourself.
What Do You Need to Complete a Garden Deck Installation?
A plan
All home improvement projects need a plan. Before embarking on a DIY decking installation, consider the following:
- The placement of the decking – ensure that your decking is to be installed on level, solid ground. If there’s plant growth in this area, clear it and place weed membrane to prevent future growth.
- The size and space – Your decking needs to be large enough to fit your purpose, whether that’s dining, entertaining, sunbathing or a play area for your children but not so big that it overwhelms your outdoor space. Mark out the prospective decking area and ensure that you can still access flowerbeds and that all nearby doors and gates can be opened and closed without issue. This will also help you to determine the square meterage of your proposed deck and the number of boards needed. Measure the longest and shortest edges of the area, then multiply these measurements. This will give you the square meterage.
- The height of the completed deck – It’s important that the completed decking doesn’t rest above the damp proof course of your home to prevent water ingress and the structural problems this causes.
- The location of the deck – It’s essential you get the position of your decking right. Will it get adequate sunlight? Will overhanging trees cause maintenance problems due to falling leaves or sticky sap? Too much shade could lead to algae
Materials
There are really only two options when it comes to decking materials:
- Wood – The original decking material remains popular, but requires regular maintenance and could warp or rot over time. It can also become extremely slippery in cold, wet weather.
- Composite decking - An increasingly common option, this wood alternative is a lot more durable than natural wood and can last for upwards of 30 years. It is also low-maintenance, and slip resistant.
To complete your decking project, you’ll also need structural components like joists, posts, and fixings such as screws and brackets. Don’t forget optional extras like balustrades or deck lighting for added safety and ambiance.
Tools
If you’re going to successfully install a deck yourself, a good set of tools can make all the difference. Ensure you have the following on hand before starting your decking installation.
Measuring and Layout Tools:
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Carpenter’s square
- Chalk or builder’s line
Cutting and Fastening Tools:
- Circular saw or hand saw
- Drill/screwdriver
Safety Gear:
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
- Dust mask (especially when cutting materials)
Optional Extras:
- Post hole digger or auger/shovel
- Weed membrane
Once you have your materials and a plan, installing a deck is relatively simple, but don’t rush it.
- Prepare the Area: Clear the site of debris and level the ground. Lay a weed membrane if necessary to prevent unwanted growth beneath the deck.
- Build the Frame: Install your subframe using joists and support posts. Ensure it’s level and secure with screws or brackets.
- Lay the Decking Boards: Start at one edge, leaving small gaps between boards for drainage. Use a spirit level regularly to check alignment.
- Add Finishing Touches: Trim excess material and install any optional features like railings or lighting.
